Keep hydrated this summer with your teeth in mind

Keeping hydrated this summer is crucial – but make sure you’re not damaging your teeth…

A healthy and balanced diet is important when it comes to maintaining a beautiful smile. Why you think about your diet the first thought is food, right? However, what you drink is also part o your diet and play s a huge role in your oral health.

When it’s warm during the summer, your fluid intake will no doubt increase, so it’s crucial that you keep note of what you’re drinking. Drinks such as cola, fruit juices and energy drinks can be refreshing and revitalising, although before consumption take a moment to consider the damage that they may do to your teeth.

Cola – or any other fizzy drink for that matter – typically contains a huge amount of sugar which can eat away at your teeth. Even the diet and sugar-free versions still damage your teeth, as the fizziness weakens the surface enamel. Reports suggest that people who drink more than four cans of fizzy drink a day are up to 500% more likely to suffer from tooth decay.

You may be under the impression that fruit juices are ‘healthy’, and therefore good for your teeth. After all, you can count it as one of your five a day, can’t you? Wrong! Some fruit juices can be more acidic than vinegar, and when consumed excessively can wear down tooth enamel over time.

The best option to both hydrate yourself and maintain good oral health is no doubt just good ol’ water, but we know that sticking solely to one type of drink can become boring pretty quickly. Below is a list of alternative that aren’t quiet as damaging to your teeth:

  • Milk
  • Coconut water (extremely refreshing)
  • Homemade iced tea
  • Sugar free squash

Being cautious about what drinks you can consume clearly has an impact on your oral health. To make sure your teeth are always in top condition make sure you regularly visit your dentist.
