What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is placed directly into the jawbone — replicating the function of a natural tooth root. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a custom-made ceramic crown is attached on top, creating a tooth that looks, feels and functions exactly like your own. At EyeSmile, dental implants are placed by specialist dentists with postgraduate training in implantology, including Pedro Arteche (MSc Dental Implantology) and Dr Jasvin Singh Bindra, who specialises in restorative dentistry and complex cases.

Implants are self-supporting, making them different from dentures or bridges. There is no need for adhesives or alterations to your adjacent teeth. They also cannot be removed. It is a permanent tooth replacement solution that preserves the bone structure.

Types of Dental Implant Treatment

EyeSmile will discuss your dental implant requirements, identifying the right solution based on the number of teeth missing, the bone volume and your goals. Your dentist will then recommend the best option after a comprehensive assessment.

Most common

Single Tooth Implant

A single tooth implant involves one titanium posts inserted into the jaw bone, with a customised crown that replaces your missing tooth without affecting the adjacent teeth.

Multiple positions

Multiple Implants

If you have more than one missing tooth that are in different positions, we will provide you with individual implants to provide a stable and natural feel, making every tooth independent.

Cost-effective

Implant-Retained Bridge

Our implant-retainer bridge is made of two implants that support a bridge, accommodating numerous teeth. This is a cost effective solution, avoiding the need of individual implants for each missing tooth.

Immediate result

Same-Day Implants

Same day implants are only provided for suitable cases, where a provisional crown is attached to the implant on the day of surgery, so you leave our practice with your tooth in place.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Permanent solution

Dental implants can last a lifetime when maintained properly. They are as close to a natural tooth you will get.

Natural appearance

Every custom-made crown is designed to match the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth, ensuring that it looks and feels natural.

Preserves jaw bone

Missing teeth can cause your jaw bone to suck in on itself. Dental implants stimulate the bone the same way the natural tooth root would, helping to preserve your facial structure.

Restores full function

With dental implants, you can eat what you want, speak naturally, and clean normally. Dental implants function exactly the same as your natural teeth, without having to remove them or glue them.

Suitability

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Adults in good health are usually suitable for dental implants. The most important element is ensuring there is enough jaw bone to support the implant. At EyeSmile, we assess this using 3D CBCT imaging.

  • You have one or more teeth missing
  • The surrounding teeth are in a healthy condition
  • You have good general health
  • You do not smoke, or you are willing to stop smoking during the treatment process
  • Your jaw has ample bone, or you are willing to consider a bone graft
  • You don't want to have dentures or bridges, you are looking for a permanent solution

If you have been told you are not a candidate for dental implants in the past, please get in touch with the EyeSmile team. With effective bone grafting techniques, we may be able to restore enough bone volume to allow for implants.

The process

Your Implant Journey

Every dental plan treatment is bespoke and planned in stages. Each step is clearly explained before it takes place, ensuring you always know what to expect.

01

Consultation

The initial consultation is a thorough assessment of your dental and medical history, combined with a clinical examination, identifying if you are suitable for dental implants. If not, we will discuss any other options.

02

3D Scan & Planning

A 3D scan helps to identify your bone volume and density, along with anatomy in three dimension. This enables us to plan your dental implant placement with 100% accuracy.

03

Implant Placement

This is the stage where the titanium implant is placed into your jaw bone, under local anaesthetic. The majority of our patients are able to return to work the next day.

04

Healing Period

The dental implant will fuse with the bone, taking anywhere from eight to sixteen weeks. During this time, we provide a temporary crown.

05

Final Restoration

Once our dental team are happy the dental implant has integrated effectively, they attach your custom-made, personalised crown to the implants, ensuring it looks natural, blending in with your surrounding teeth.

What to expect

Does Implant Surgery Hurt?

Dental implants can be uncomfortable during the placement process. During this time you receive a local anaesthetic and it's not uncommon to feel pressure. It's a straightforward and painless process.

Once the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience some mild discomfort, along with swelling, that can last up to three days. You can manage this with ease, taking over the counter pain medication, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. The majority of our patients return to work the next day.

Painless surgery using a local anaesthetic
Mild discomfort and soreness for up to three days post surgery
Mild pain and discomfort can be effectively managed with ibuprofen or paracetamol
We recommend a soft diet for one week
The majority of patients go back to work the following day
Longevity

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are designed to last with the titanium post lasting a lifetime, once fully fused with the jawbone. Ceramic crowns can last up to twenty five years before they need to be replaced. This is a long term solution, lasting longer than other tooth replacement options.

How long your dental implants last is determined by your overall oral health, having regular hygiene appointments, and avoiding smoking. Implants, when well-maintained and annually assessed can last for decades.

FAQs

Dental Implants — Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question you cannot find the answer to? Contact the EyeSmile team now for a personalised answer and expert advice.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are long-term tooth replacement options with titanium posts lasting a lifetime, while crowns can last up to twenty five years before being replaced. With regular hygiene appointments and routine dental check-ups you can improve the longevity of your dental implants.

Does dental implant surgery hurt?

The actual dental implant placement procedure is done under a local anaesthetic and it should not be painful, though you may feel some pressure. After the procedure, it's not uncommon to experience mild discomfort and swelling, for around three days. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

How much do dental implants cost in Whitton, Twickenham?

Dental implant costs vary based on your bone condition and how many implants you need. You can view our full fee schedule on our dental fees page, or arrange a consultation, for a customised and itemised quote. We do provide financial options, helping you spread the cost.

Can anyone get dental implants?

Dental implants are best suited for adults that are in good health and have adequate jaw bone volume. Patients that have insufficient bone may still be suitable, if they are willing to undergo a bone graft. Your dentist will assess your suitability during a comprehensive consultation, as diabetes and heavy smoking can both negatively impact the healing process.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

A standard dental implant can take anywhere from three to six months. This is from the placement procedure to the final crown, giving the implant time to fuse with the jaw bone. We do provide same day implants, providing a provisional tooth on the day of surgery, in suitable cases.
