There are an estimated 3.9 million people in the UK suffering from Diabetes (as at 2019). Diabetes can seriously affect your vision and in some cases, can even cause blindness. For this reason, it is particularly important for you to regularly visit one of our experienced optometrists for a specialist diabetic eye examination.
As somebody who suffers from diabetes, you are more likely to develop cataracts, glaucoma and retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes. It develops when high blood sugar levels damage cells found in the back of your eye – the area known as the retina. If left to develop, the damaged cells could lead to permanent blindness. Diagnosing this condition is difficult as there are no obvious symptoms. Our experienced optometrists can detect early signs of the disease by looking at your retina using a specialist camera and the latest scanning equipment for the back of the eye. The Optimap is currently only available at a handful of practices in the borough, and EyeSmile are proud to offer this technology to our patients.
