Soften the wax. Everything else follows.
Preparation is key to ensuring that your earwax removal is comfortable. A few days before your appointment, you will use softening drops, providing a clean removal and the best end result.
- 01
Five to seven days before
Your audiologist will recommend using Earol spray or olive oil drops to both of your ears twice a day before your appointment. Without softening the wax, it will be difficult and almost impossible to clean effectively in one visit.
- 02
On the day
Before you arrive for your appointment, please ensure you have provided us with your medical questionnaire and consent form. Bring the Earol or olive oil drops with you, as they may need to be used during your appointment. Do not try and clean your ears yourself with cotton buds, this can damage the skin in the ear canal.
- 03
If preparation was not possible
If for some reason you couldn't soften the wax, please let us know when making your appointment. In most cases, we can go ahead, though softening, does provide a better first time outcome.

Do you have ear ache, itching, or dull pressure inside the ear canal that has not settled for a few days?

Earwax removal — frequently asked questions
Is your question not answered here? Contact EyeSmile today.
Is microsuction earwax removal painful?
Microsuction is a painless process where you may experience some mild pressure or hear the suction device. It is a quick procedure that is more comfortable than traditional syringing techniques.
How long does earwax removal take?
One or both ears can usually be effectively treated within fifteen to thirty minutes, this includes your consultation and otoscopy exam, a simple exam of your external auditory canal and tympanic membrane.
What happens if no wax is found?
Should the EyeSmile audiologist examine your ear and not find significant wax build-up, they discuss your symptoms in detail, recommending an appropriate next step, that may include a ENT specialist referral.
Can I fly after microsuction earwax removal?
Definitely. Microsuction clears your ears immediately, making it safe to fly. In fact, many of our patients book their ear wax appointment before flying for this very reason.
