The OCT scan is a quick assessment where you look at a small target inside the machine. This scan is non-contact and completely painless. You will experience a brief flash of light before the imaging is complete.

Does OCT imaging hurt or feel uncomfortable?
Definitely not. OCT imagining is non-invasive and completely painless. You look into a machine and focus on a target, while the machine takes an image in seconds without making any contact with your eye.
How long does the scan take?
An OCT scan takes approximately five minutes per eye, after which your optometrist will review the images, adding another ten minutes to your appointment.
Do I need dilating drops for OCT?
No. The OCT technology used by EyeSmile does not require dilating drops, enabling you to drive yourself to and from your appointment without the risk of your vision being restricted.
How often should I have OCT imaging?
For EyeSmile patients without any risk factors and a normal baseline, we recommend you have OCT imaging every two years, along with your routine eye exams. If you have risk factors or borderline findings, we may recommend annual screening, ensuring we detect any changes early.
Is OCT covered by the NHS or my health insurance?
No, OCT imagining is not usually available with NHS sight tests. You may find if you have a private health insurance it is covered.
