How old does my child need to be for an eye examination?
At EyeSmile, we provide children’s eye examinations from the age of three. We assess your little one using picture charts and retinoscopy. When a vision problem is detected early, it improves the outcome.
Is my child's eye test free?
Yes, children under the age of sixteen receive free eye examinations, which are NHS-funded. This is the same for those under nineteen that are in full-time education. The examination is free, but should your child need glasses or contact lenses, those will be at a separate cost.
What if my child won't cooperate?
We understand your concern. The EyeSmile optometrists have extensive experience working with young and nervous children. We adapt the examination to gain as much information as possible, even if your child won't respond. If your child is very uncomfortable, we recommend rebooking the examination for another day.
How often should children have eye examinations?
Children should have an eye exam each year. We recommend booking an examination earlier if you feel your child is struggling with their vision, as children's vision can change quickly, which is why regular monitoring is essential, ensuring any problems are detected and treated early.
My child passed a school vision screening — do they still need an eye test?
At EyeSmile, we recommend that even if your child has passed the school screening test, which is useful, it is not as comprehensive as a full eye examination. While schools primarily check for distance, they can miss numerous eye problems that only a full and comprehensive eye examination can find.
